Representative Government for the Town of Montague was approved:
- By Annual Town Meeting Vote - (03/10/1962)
Article #14 (Unanimous Vote) - By the Commonwealth of Massachusetts - (05/01/1962)
Ch. 398 Acts of 1962 - By Annual Town Election - (03/04/1963)
(1,556 Yea - 663 Nays)
The first election of Town Meeting Members was held 03/02/1964.
(126 Members for one, two, and three year terms)
The first Town Meeting wit Representative Governement was held 03/21/1964.
HOW TOWN MEETING WORKS
- The times and locations of Town Meetings are established by the Board of Selectmen.
- The warrant - business to be addressed - is also prepared, posted, and distributed by the Board of Selectmen.
- The motions of the warrant are made available to Town Meeting Members upon arrival to the Town Meeting or they can be obtained from Board of Selectmen in advance.
- Town Meeting requires a quorum of at least a simple majority -- one more than half the total number of elected Town Meeting Members.
- Town Meeting members that are unable to attend a meeting should contact the Town Clerk to request to be excused prior to the meeting.
- Town Meetings are brought to order, run by, and dismissed by the Moderator.
