The Role of the Selectmen

"The board of selectmen is commonly the executive arm of the government of New England towns in the United States. The board typically consists of three or five members, with or without staggered terms."

"The term 'selectman' is gender neutral. Some towns and journalist style manuals use terms not defined in state statutes such as 'Selectwoman,' 'Selectperson,' and 'Select Board.' In all states the statutes use masculine forms such as selectmen, board of selectmen, or First Selectman and these are the proper terms to use – neutral in regards to the sex of the office holder(s), but consistent with the grammatical gender used in statutes."

"The Board of Selectmen of the Town of Montague recognizes the need to codify the traditional and accepted working relationships among the members of the Board, between the Board and the Town Administrator, and between the Board and other town boards, committees, employees, officials and citizens. The Board also recognizes the need to systemize and document the Town's public policies and procedures.

The Board of Selectmen consists of three duly elected members and derives its authority and responsibilities from the statutes of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the By-Laws of the Town of Montague. Before assuming official duties, each newly elected member shall be sworn to faithful performance of official responsibilities by the Town Clerk."
